This movie starts with David Byrne singing Don't Fence Me In and then proceeds to break McDonald's First Law of Movie Viewing: any film that has David Byrne on the soundtrack can't be all bad.
Chris O'Donnell plays Jimmie Shannon, a bachelor
who can't bring himself to marry his girlfriend, Anne (Rene Zellweger). When Jimmie's grandfather (Peter Ustinov) dies, he tells Jimmie in his videotaped will that he'll inherit $100 million if he marries by his 30th birthday.
Unfortunately, Jimmie turns 30 in two days. His buddy, Marco (Artie Lange), priest (James Cromwell), lawyer (Ed Asner) and Grandpa's broker (Hal Holbrook) all try to get Jimmie hitched in time to inherit the cash. Jimmie screws up his proposal to Anne, so he has to find a woman willing to marry him for the money — quickly.
This is convenient for the directors because they can enlist some female guest stars — Brooke Shields as a chain-smoking rich girl, Mariah Carey making her screen debut as an opera star — before the inevitable finale. Don't tell me you've guessed already?
