Perhaps it's best not to delve into what happened in the childhoods of director Tim Burton and star Johnny Depp to enable them to produce Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and now this extraordinary excursion into horror.
Drawing on
but not faithful to the 19th Century classic by American writer Washington Irving, Depp plays turn-of-the-19th-century detective Ichabod Crane, banished Gambon), his daughter (Christina Ricci), her stepmother (Miranda Richardson) and the magistrate (portly Richard Griffiths of TV's Pie In The Sky).
