Angela's Ashes: The Feelgood Version you could call it. Agnes Browne (Anjelica Huston) might be an Irish housewife with six sons and a daughter and her husband dead since 10 minutes past 4 this afternoon.
She mightn't make much money with
her fruit and vegetable cart in a street market, but she's got her pride and her children wear matching sweaters to the funeral (they came from the same charity).
Unfortunately she has to go to Mr Billy (the menacing Ray Winstone), the neighbourhood loan shark, to borrow the cash for the funeral, and son Frankie needs to buy tools.
Agnes' life trucks on — Pierre, the French baker, asks her on a date; Marion, her best friend, gets bad news; she has her dream, to meet Tom Jones; and Mr Billy is always there.
Which is probably enough to keep you interested for 92 minutes on a lazy summer evening.
