‘Is this legal?’: Rogue snack that’s left Aussies fuming

A photo of a rather unconventional snack – a sausage nestled inside a slice of fairy bread – has gone viral, sparking a wave of opinions and strong emotions online.

A man posted the image to Reddit, referring to the creation as the “fairy snag”, much to the horror of purists who believe that these Australian barbecue staples should be enjoyed separately.

The photo features a slice of fairy bread, a beloved treat in Australia made with white bread slathered in butter and topped with colourful sprinkles, adorned with a sausage and some sauce.

“Anyone else experienced this two-in-one?” he captioned his post about this salty-sweet combo.

The post amassed more than 4000 upvotes and more than 700 comments.

“Is this legal?” one user quipped, echoing the sentiment of many.

Others called it “a monstrosity”, “offensive” and “against the rules”.

“Citizenship revoked,” joked another user, while terms like “abomination” and “un-Australian” were also thrown around.

However, it turns out that the original poster didn’t invent this dish and it was actually inspired by a recent mini-episode of Bluey.

In the episode titled Butlers, Bluey makes an outlandish request to his in-house chef in his imaginary dream house, asking for a “fairy bread sausage sandwich but with no orange sprinkles and not the sugar-free tomato sauce”.

Fans of the show have since been inspired to try the unusual culinary combination, sharing their attempts online.

On the Adult Blueys Fans Facebook page, one woman admitted she “just had to try it” after watching the episode, stating, “It was actually pretty good!”, along with a photo of her half-eaten snack.

Many international members of the group were left shocked and questioned whether this was truly something Australians eat.

“It’s a FANTASY imagination episode,” one person clarified. “But we do eat those things … just separately.”

“As an Aussie, I feel the need to explain that these are two iconic dishes that are not meant to be combined. Please do not try this at home and then condemn Australian cuisine forever,” warned another user.

Others also revealed they were “tempted” to give it a go after watching the episode.

“Tried it at my daughter’s birthday the other day, and yeah, it’s yum,” one shared.

Others joked that it was missing essential condiments, like Vegemite and Milo.
