Her plan filled her head. And, she kept hearing strange noises. finally, she got up.

'What's going on? she asked.

Sounds of banging and wrenching were coming from next door.

'It sounds like the end of the world,' Dad said. 'I'll have a look and try to see what the strange old man is up to.'

While he was gone, Jessie remembered the hammer and screwdriver that Mr Silas had been carrying that afternoon when she'd come home from school.

He must be patching that hole she'd been looking through.

She had a terrible thought - if he was being that careful about his privacy, that meant he'd probably be sure to have his back gate locked, too.
