Fiona Mckay: Olwen Twelve Pockets

Scholastic publishers in New Zealand are using the Blue Balloon imprint to re-publish a range of picture books that are old favourites but which haven't been readily available for a number of years.

Olwen Twelve Pockets, first published in 1993, is one of these much-loved titles.

Olwen has 12 brightly coloured pockets on her favourite dungarees. She goes through each of her pockets in turn to reveal the very useful objects they hold. But the greatest treasure of all is contained in the last pocket (of course!).

The lively text makes for great interaction between reader and listener as you can encourage your child to try to guess the contents of the pockets based on the clues provided. The bold illustrations by Kathryn Orton are also a delight.
