It seems cruel to be thinking about winter makeup in the heat of summer, but there is some consolation. At least we get to do real makeup after a summer of barely-there lip gloss stuff. That means strong colours that aren't meant to blend away into nothing. Most
of the winter stock arrives next month so we'll make do with what's already out there for now.
1. Bobbi Brown Brow Kit Sable and Mahogany

With the comeback of the Brooke Shields brow, not everyone can reforest as quickly as is needed, so this Brow Kit meets every need. The two colours help to fill in the blanks in a believable way for brunettes. There's also a small brow brush and some mini tweezers - for when you find a straggler in the rear view mirror. The Blonde and Rich Brown kit is a safer bet for fairer complexions.

2. Dior Flight Peachy Adventure 001

Already the northern hemisphere is planning spring, and Dior's fabulous face, eye and lip compact complete with whopper D - in case anyone was in any doubt as to its maker - is first class. The stylish palate has an easy-wear pink lip gloss, a soft coral blusher and a great metallic grey eyeshadow to stop everything getting too pretty-pretty. Covetable.

3. Chanel Le Vernis Madness
$44 for 13ml
This amazing rich chocolate nail enamel hasn't quite hit the stores yet but you may want to put your name down for one when it does. This is likely to be the hot nail colour for winter. If you do nothing else, this is a brilliant update on winter makeup and Chanel's long-last, chip-resistant formula is user-friendly.

4. Lancome Le Rouge Absolu Rouge Grenat
$55 for 4.2ml
Here's a lipstick that promises fuller lips, thanks to a plumping polymer, as well as endurance-length moisture and non-feathering colour. What's more, this adults-only red is a killer colour.

5. Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder Translucent
$69 for 29g
Grown-up winter makeup will need a light dusting of powder. It sets makeup so your application lasts longer. This humdinger has French cashmere talc in it so the look is sheer and natural. Don't be frightened by the deathly Morticia Addams shade of Translucent. It is invisible and suitable for all skin tones.
