With it reported that 42 per cent of marriages end in divorce newlyweds may be approaching married life with trepidation.

However, over half of marriages are successful and those who are in happy partnerships have revealed the secrets to keeping the spark alive.

In a new thread on Reddit user CaptBroadside asked: "Married people of Reddit, aside from communication what makes marriages last?"

They added a "serious" tag to the thread in a hope to deter any joke answers clearly looking for some advice they could actually use, reports Daily Mail.

It wasn't long before married men and women stepped forward with their surprising tips on keeping your other half happy.

Many said that they to reconciling with a partner is to intentionally loose an argument or let their partner "win".

One user even claimed this was the reason his wife believes she is always right in every situation.

Another common piece of advice was to be totally open and honest with a partner especially when it comes to physical appearance.

One user said that just because you are in a marriage you should not feel obliged to do anything.

It is a common mistake among couples that they must spend their lives joined at the hip which is not something that these husbands and wives recommend.

One user said that they had kept their marriage going simply by developing their own hobbies and interests.

Another agreed adding that it is hugely important to know when to take a step back from a relationship.

While it was agreed that separate hobbies are vital it is important to show interest in your other half's passions.

One user said it is important to understand what your other half wants from the marriage from the get go.

For other couples their marriage mantra is simply to have respect for their other half.

One user said it was important to know when to cut your losses and visit a marriage counselor.
