Our fashion jury round up the best and worst looks on the Golden Globes red carpet. Plus a pointer to the three best dressed gents of the evening.

Joanna Hunkin, Head of Entertainment

Best: Emma Stone
This jumpsuit was an unconventional choice for a red carpet event but the fashion forward A-lister pulled it off, looking sleek and glamourous. An oversized bow detail kept the back interesting and added some drama to the look, as did the dazzling jeweled
bustier. Love.

Worst: Kerry Washington
The Scandal star has been known to take fashion risks but this one just didn't pay off. There's too much going on here - between the textured fabric, colour blocked palette and uneven hem. Not her best.

Rachel Glucina, New Zealand's reigning gossip queen

Best: Diane Kruger
The 38-year-old continues her role as Queen of the Style Icons on the red carpet. And the best bit - she chose Kiwi designer Emilia Wickstead (who's a fave of the Duchess of Cambridge). Kruger is a modern-day Grace Kelly in this muted silver gown. It's very Old Hollywood. And we like that she accessorised with Pacey (aka Joshua Jackson) and a social conscience. She held a sign reading "Je suis Charlie", meaning the red carpet was not just a frivolous gathering of jewels, gowns and egos.

Worst: Keira Knightley
Yes, I know what you're thinking, it's Chanel. But it came with an oversized yoke that only a Victorian child would have coveted. She reckoned it took 30 people to make the dress in a week. But frankly, they could have been doing something better with their time. We know Keira is preggers, but that's no excuse for this unflattering number. Where were the fashion cops and why didn't they breathalyse her stylist at the wardrobe?

Nicky Park, Life & Style Editor online

Best: Naomi Watts
Aussie actress Naomi Watts was a ray of sunshine in this yellow strapless Gucci gown. The blonde beauty said this dress was her only choice for the night, "no pressure this year, I like the colour." Watts wore a statement neckpiece we've seen on her a couple of times before - a diamond Bulgari snake - clocking in at more than 76 sparkling carats. Her partner and Globe nominee Liev Schreiber didn't scrub up too badly either! ! Honourable mentions go to Emma Stone and Sienna Miller.

Worst: Lana Del Rey
It's The Little Mermaid meets Priscilla Presley. This pleated (and kinda crushed) satin, aqua number teamed with auburn bouffant is a hot mess on singer Lana Del Rey. I applaud a splash of colour on the red carpet, but this seaside shade doesn't compliment the 29-year-old's dreamy alabaster skin and that bow at the front, I just don't understand at all. Runner-up: Amal Clooney's saggy white satin gloves.

Best: Tie between Emma Stone and Chrissy Teigen
I'm not a huge fan of attachments and bling on dresses, but I thought Chrissy Teigen's dress was demure and classy. The beading was beautiful. There's a bit of see-through action happening so we can see her model pins, but it's not all cleavage and thigh-high slits for her this time and I liked it. Gorgeous! I also have to mention Emma Stone. I love that she took a risk and went for something different and she looked totally cute! The jumpsuit was young and daring, yet classy at the same time, I think she nailed it!

Worst: Claire Danes
There were so many contenders this year, which always blows my mind! There are so many designers, so many gorgeous gowns, and yet we get dresses like the tinsel thing worn by Dakota Johnson, the weird choice from Kerry Washington and let's not forget Keira Knightley in her nanna's doily. But I think Claire Danes takes the cake for me. It may be Valentino, but that just means it's expensive, cause it certainly wasn't pretty! It looked like an ill-fitted rug.

Best dressed gents

Best dressed men: Clive Owen, Eddie Redmayne and Matt Bomer. Photos / Getty Images.

Clive Owen: The 50-year-old stepped out in a teal velvet jacket by Giorgio Armani. We don't even mind that it's recycled. He wore it on the red carpet in October at the Rome Film Festival while promoting The Knick, for which he was Golden Globe nominated. Still, he looks so dapper. Give him a glass of whiskey and a smoking room, and he's ours. Second-hand smoke included. Owen is nominated for best actor in a drama series for his role in The Knick, a medical drama set in New York during the early part of the twentieth century. He plays a doctor. And he can take our pulse anytime.

Eddie Redmayne: More dashing velvet, this time on the shoulders of handsome 33-year-old Brit, Eddie Redmayne. The Best Actor nominee recently tied the knot and joked that he should still be on his honeymoon. We're glad Eddie decided to pop on a bow tie, add a white kerchief to his top pocket and bring his bride along to the Globes and earn a spot on our most dapper gents list. We love the smart detail, down to the black, leather timepiece.

Matt Bomer: We're big fans of the navy suit and this Ralph Lauren Black Label tuxedo fits Mr Bomer like a glove. The well-dressed chap was a winner on the evening, taking home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. We're mighty glad the very youthful looking 37-year-old father-of-three got the chance to stand up on stage and show off his smart ensemble. And how dazzling does this blue suit make his eyes look!
