Although it's duck season, Delaney Mes says she prefers to purchase her duck from the supermarket. She's gone for something more accessible for these recipes, and kept things simple.

"A very easy slow-cooker dish, and a simple pan-searing makes two simple and impressive meals. Don't forget the glass of red."

For an authentic taste of Italy, Viva eating out editor Jesse Mulligan says Osteria del Pane in Herne Bay is the place to go.

"We've been familiar with that phrase al dente for 30 years in New Zealand but a restaurant that serves properly toothy pasta is still a rare and beautiful thing."

Canvas writer Kim Knight was hit with a "punch in the palate" when she dined at Greek-inspired restaurant Gerome.

"The meat was meaty, and, as previously noted, the olives landed with a thwack. After years of eating soft, sweet pork belly, this was like getting a seat at the grown-up table."

The Crew Club is no more, after several weeks of renovations the Viaduct hot spot has transformed into a modern South Pacific eatery and drinkery - The Lula Inn.

The Lula Inn promises to provide a "miles-away-hideaway" hideaway, where the folks are friendly and the good times just "keep-on-keeping-on."
