Fashion: Denim blues - and blacks

You can’t go wrong with high-waisted or boyfriend style.

As ever, jeans are available in all styles and washes but there are some definite trends to watch for - high-waisted jeans are dominating the marketplace, followed closely by a relaxed boyfriend-style.

Washes available range from dark indigo through to faded and distressed details feature strongly.

From New Zealand's denim purveyors Workshop, I have selected high-waisted Twiggy II in dark indigo which comes in a 10oz Japanese denim for a modern version of a vintage classic.

Stolen Denim from Stolen Girlfriends Club fields contemporary rock'n'roll silhouettes and pays homage to SGC's musical muses. Its Baby Strange in vintage black is a mid-rise, relaxed fit with distressed abrasions in a 13.5oz Turkish denim.

Topshop's denim collection is fronted by Hailey Baldwin, one of the modern-day fashion brat pack, and features an expansive range of fits, silhouettes, washes and styling.

I couldn't go past its Jamie flares, a super-stretch high-waisted jean that is slim to the knee and flared to the hem - on-trend styling with 70s influence and with "double denim".

Moochi's John Jean is a new addition to its collection. It's a classic boyfriend cut with a slouchy fit best worn on the hips and ideally with cuffs rolled up.

Ruby's Indigo Jean - a cropped high-waisted fashion jean with oversized patch pockets, with a small amount of stretch in dark indigo.

And for an all-time classic Levi's revisits the legendary 501 jean.

With a tapered leg, shortened crotch and distressed knees, the 501 CT is a definite must-buy for denim purists, designed to be worn low on the hips and cuffed at the ankle in a 13oz denim.
