Hair and now: Benni Tognini

Australian salon stylist and owner, Benni Tognini is in demand around the world. He has worked extensively across the United States, England, Canada, South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.

In recognition of his contribution to the industry, Tognini was made an Australian Ambassador for Hairdressing.

The stylist believes his success is partly due to his empathy and ability to work closely with clients, defining and developing solutions to their requirements.

He shared some of his professional secrets while in New Zealand recently.

What's the new Jennifer Aniston haircut?

At the moment hair is all about natural texture and movement. We are moving away from the straight look to more accessible natural styles.

What will be big colourwise for summer?

I think it will be warm brunette shades. But these colours will come up a bit lighter as the cuts become lighter and more layered.

Is there an expiry date for long hair?

Absolutely. It's not linked to age, but to the condition of the hair. Long, brittle, limp, moppy hair has to come off.

What's the best thing you can do for your hair?

Brush it. That's the most important thing to stimulate the scalp and bring out the natural oils to nourish the hair. Ritual treatments are the new service salons are offering. These are spa treatments for the hair to maintain and enhance the richness, gloss and healthiness. You can mix a shot of this with a shot of that, depending on the type of hair and its needs. What should you never do to your hair?

Never never be tempted to home-colour. Never do anything that dehydrates the hair like excessive drying and straightening, this makes it lifeless and dull.

What should you do if you're not happy with your haircut or colour?

Go back to your stylist and tell them about the issues you are having so you can rectify things.

Any blowdrying tips?

Don't put your head upside down to dry your hair. Cuts aren't designed to be dried like that. Get some clips and dry it in about three sections, starting from underneath.
