Day out gets bigger

There are no big names like the White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand or Iggy in the second announcement of acts playing January's Big Day Out.

But there are a few must-sees, nonetheless, such as Philadelphia hip-hop legend Common, British act The Go! Team, and knob-twiddling terrorist, Mylo. Plus Shihad return to the BDO stage for the first time since 2003, when they were called Pacifier.

Other international acts announced are Mudvayne, Kid Kenobi, The Greenhornes, Jean Grae, Edan, End Of Fashion, DJ James Murphy (from LCD Soundsystem), The Subways, and Wolfmother.

And the new local acts include Breaks Co-Op, Blindspott, Shapeshifter, DJ Sir Vere, Baitercell & Schumacher, The Sneaks, Kitsch, The Bats, Rhombus, Gestalt Switch and the Fast Crew, who also play some Australian shows.

A new stage featuring solely New Zealand acts will be where the hip-hop stage used to be, next to the Boiler Room.

The only major act playing Australia, and not Auckland, is Sri Lankan-born Brit-hop soul chick, M.I.A.
