If you think your Cadbury Creme Egg tastes a little different this year that might be because the chocolate shell recipe has changed.
Reports that the latest batch of Creme Eggs tasted different were followed up by British tabloid The Sun, with Cadbury's confirming it switched out Dairy Milk fora "standard cocoa mix chocolate" in the shell.
Cadbury New Zealand spokesperson Keryn Biffin told the Herald Online that the recipe change would affect local supplies of the popular sweet treat.
"Yes, there is a change from Dairy Milk Chocolate to now the standard, traditional Cadbury milk chocolate for the product sold in NZ," she said via email.
"We have always used a range of milk chocolate blends for different products, depending on their shape or consistency," she said.
A Kraft spokesperson told The Independent that consumer tests found the new "standard cocoa mix chocolate" was "the best one for the Creme Egg, which is why we've used it this year".
"The Creme Egg has never been called the Cadbury's Dairy Milk Creme Egg. We have never played on the fact that Dairy Milk chocolate was used."
NZ Herald readers have not responded well to the news, venting their disappointment on the Herald Life Facebook page.
"Even more of a reason not to eat Cadbury," Leigh Townley said.
"They've been different for a few years, what a shame. Would LOVE Whitakers to do a version of this mmmmm," Vicky Mann replied.
However, there is some good news for Kiwi Creme Egg fans. International reports that the multi-pack box would be cut down from five to six eggs won't be happening here.
"There is no change to the packaging format," Ms Biffin promised.
