Malamala Beach Club Fiji
Where to find it: Mamanuca Islands, Fiji. You get to the beach club via a 25-minute vessel transfer from Port Denarau at 10am; South Sea Cruises' vessels leave the island again at 4.15pm and 5.15pm.
The view: Stunning in every direction, with miles of turquoise seaas far as the eye can see. Malamala Island is opposite South Sea Island and in the vicinity are Beachcomber, Treasure and Malolo Islands, among many others.
The vibe: Arriving at the island is exciting in itself thanks to the long jetty and white sand beaches you can see miles away from the boat – it feels like you're approaching your own slice of paradise. We were welcomed with warm smiles and big "Bulas" then slowly walked along the pier taking it all in: swaying palm trees, the sound of the waves gently splashing the shoreline and the upbeat tunes drifting from the beach club's main restaurant, pool and bar area.
Malamala Beach Club is just over a year old and the decor is fresh and contemporary, with lots of bright colours popping against that beautiful blue sky. The best place to hang about is around the infinity pool which melds seamlessly into the lagoon beyond – we'd recommend you reserve a poolside daybed (FJD$50) for the day. Or, if you prefer a little more serenity, there are beachside cabanas for hire dotted around the island's edges, which are serviced by private butlers.
The chat: After arriving at my daybed I had a waitress almost instantly show up at my side introducing herself and offering the menu. I started with one of the seven handcrafted cocktails, Naked Lady, infused with my favourite Bombay Sapphire gin, lychee, ginger beer and lemon juice. Divine! And very photogenic for the 'Gram too.
The menu: I went for the Tuna Poke and Mochiko Chicken – both were fresh and light but filling, and were the perfect summer-by-the-beach bites.
The expectation: I'd heard lots about Malamala Beach Club from friends and had to see it for myself. I was curious as to what could be so different to relaxing on other beaches, but what stands out for me is the location (not too far from the mainland yet far enough to get that island feel), the superb food, the impeccable service, the friendly staff and the great facilities. Especially that pool.
The reality: The beach club crew really do make you feel spoiled. There's absolutely nothing else to stress about except whether it's too early for a round of cocktails or if you should go for another swim or paddleboard. My glass was never empty, my food arrived in a timely manner and I found the atmosphere classy and relaxing.
