CEO of Things of My Very Own Inc, Rayn Boncie, also told WNYT 13 News: "One little boy asked for feminine hygiene products for his younger sister."
The charity is running a holiday gift drive for children by writing their wish lists on tags, which are picked up by people who want to donate the gifts.
Boncie said kids are requesting toys as well as basic needs like food.
"Some of the families that we work with get food stamps but run out at the end of the month."
The organisation helps an estimated five to seven thousand children and families each year.
