You may think celebrities are in a different league when it comes to red carpet events but when Halloween rolls around, it's a whole new ballgame.

Their costumes are ingenious, on-trend and almost always extremely expensive.

Most of the time they get it right but sometimes they get it incredibly wrong and offend a lot of people.

Less than a day after Thor star Chris Hemsworth apologised for wearing a First Nations costume to a Lone Ranger party back in 2015, Hilary Duff stepped out with her boyfriend in a couples Pilgrim and Native American chief costume.

People didn't waste any time labelling the couple as racist and being guilty of cultural appropriation.

No @HilaryDuff Traditional dress is not a costume and you being dressed as a pilgrim proves to me how insensitive and ignorant you are. https://t.co/0NvP6DD79I

I can't believe Hilary Duff looked at her boyfriend and thought "yes this costume is perfect and not offensive."

They may be the newest celebrities in the firing line for their Halloween costume choice but they definitely weren't the first.

Chris Brown caused a huge amount of outrage after he and his friends thought it'd be perfectly fine to go as members of the Taliban.

Heading to Rihanna's Halloween party in 2012, the singer posed with fake guns and bullet belts with his friends and captioned the photo: "Ain't nobody f**king with my clique!!!"

He later spoke to Power 106 Radio telling everyone to "get the f**k over it ... I was dressed as the people we kill!"

Prince Harry made an absolutely royal mistake after images surfaced of him dressed as a Nazi soldier back when he was 20 years old.

He later said he was "very sorry."

Indian-American community leader Rajan Zed told the Times of India, "Goddess Kali is highly revered in Hinduism and she is meant to be worshipped in temples and not to be used in clubs for publicity stunts or thrown around loosely for dramatic effect."

The world was heartbroken after news surfaced the beloved Cecil the lion was shot by an American hunter back in 2015 which was only made worse by Pretty Little Liars star Ashley Benson's Instagram post.

Benson appealed to her followers for help on what costume she should wear posting a photo of herself in a sexy lion costume asking them: "what do you guys think of this Cecil the lion costume?"

She later edited the caption to only say lion and posted a second message saying: "Yesterday's post was in poor taste and I absolutely regret all of the hurt that photo caused ... I love you all and I apologise if I let you down."

Australians were furious and upset at comedian Bill Maher in 2006 after he dressed as dead Steve Irwin complete with a bloody khaki shirt and a stingray barb sticking out of his chest.

Maher wore the poor taste costume less than two months after Irwin's passing however refused to apologise saying on his show Real Time with Bill Maher: "People who really love animals understand if you get killed by one, chances are you were doing something to it you shouldn't have been."

Numerous other celebrities have come under fire for wearing Native American costumes including singer John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen.

Paris Hilton was in trouble for her Native American costume back in 2010 but the family clearly haven't learnt their lesson as photos emerged of younger sister Nicky attending Friday night's Casamigos Halloween party in, you guessed it, a Native American costume.
