Bride-to-be faced with awkward new name dilemma

When it comes to getting married, traditionally a woman will take her husband's surname and eschew her own.

But what if that means you're new moniker is, well, ridiculous?

One bride-to-be has revealed to the internet the new name she's looking at should she follow tradition and change her last name to that of her husband's.

Meet Shannon. Soon to be, yep, Shannon Shannon.

Taking to the wedding forum, weddingbee.com, Shannon asked for some advice ahead of her pending nuptials.

"My first name is my fiance's last name," she wrote in her post.

Shannon shared that she and her husband-to-be had dated for nine years - clearly she's had a while to consider this.

"... I guess I need to finally face the decision of what I will do.

"Honestly, it never bothered me even when people made jokes," she wrote. "His last name didn't matter to me because I love him.

"I am not sure if I want to change my last name or hyphenate or something else. My last name is longer than his, but it's only two syllables, so it's not too much of a mouthful."

She went on to share that someone had bizarrely advised her to change her first name or go by her middle name. " ... but I couldn't imagine being called by another name and I like my first name." Fair enough, Shannon.

While it may seem like a clear choice to buck tradition and stick with her maiden name, she adds that she "would like to have the same last name as my future children, but I am not against keeping my last name. We don't have any family or religious restrictions, so the choice is mine."

The advice from the forum was to keep her own surname, come up with a new surname for both of them, or to encourage her fiance to take her last name instead.

One user shared: "I know a couple that both the groom and bride got rid of their last names and took on a completely different last name when they married. Neither of them liked their last names so it wasn't a tough decision for them."

Another user thought Shannon should become double Shannon: "One of my old hairdresser's name was Chanel Chanel ..." they shared.

And another quite liked the idea: "I don't personally see a problem with being 'Shannon Shannon' – I think it's kinda cool and would jump at it."

One even joked that the bride-to-be could start introducing herself as "Shannon ²".

Grateful for the anonymous advice, Shannon replied that she would put the idea of taking her surname to her fiance.

Clearly warming to the idea of Shannon Shannon, she added: "A salesperson at our cell phone carrier once said I could be the next Duran Duran. It's definitely a good icebreaker to bring up!"
