The original poster said they understood that weddings were expensive, but felt that they were increasingly becoming “less about love and more like narcissistic flex contests with a price tag that keeps on climbing”.
“Am I an a****** if I say no just because I can’t/won’t spend that on dinner at someone else’s wedding?” they asked, saying the couple’s request made them feel “straight-up awkward”.
They clarified they were not offended, but said they simply could not afford the cost.
The post quickly went viral, attracting more than a thousand disgruntled commenters.
“Can I be offended for you?” one user asked, adding: “I think that this is atrocious behaviour. The best way to offset costs is to not spend so much.”
Others suggested cheaper catering options such as barbecue or tacos, while one commenter joked the guest should reply: “Similar to you, I can’t afford a $75 dinner.”
Another urged the invitee to “go ahead and decline”, saying wedding receptions should be an opportunity for couples to host and thank guests for celebrating their big day.
“Why does this person have zero class and zero etiquette?” another user asked, calling the request “sickening and an absolute breach of civility and manners”.
The backlash echoed a 2021 controversy in which another cost-cutting couple sparked outrage after reportedly asking guests to help wash dishes at their wedding.
Guests were allegedly ushered into the kitchen to scrub plates, glasses and cutlery, after the couple allegedly overspent on their venue and attire.
A relative of the bride later claimed the wedding was self-catered but the couple could only afford to feed three-quarters of their guests.
