Christopher Guest, the crazed genius who ruthlessly sent up rock bands in This Is Spinal Tap, does a similar favour for just-off Middle America in this mockumentary, which introduces several dogs and their owners in their homes then follows them to a
championship in Philadelphia.
There's Gerry and Cookie Fleck (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara): Gerry was born with two left feet and Cookie's mating habits are well-known. Meg (Parker Posey) and her mate (Michael Hitchcock) are of the retail generation.
Sherri Ann (Jennifer Coolidge), not light years from Anna Nicole Smith, has a geriatric millionaire husband and a deep friendship with Christy (Jane Lynch), the lesbian dominatrix who trains their poodle. Stefan (Michael McKean) and Scott (John Michael Higgins) are a gay couple with — naturally — twin Shih Tzus.
Light, witty, affectionate.
