Bar review: Tyler Street Garage, Auckland CBD

First drinks: Were brought to our table by a friendly waitress who couldn't tell us what "gomme" was (a mystery ingredient that featured in two of the three house cocktails) but was more than happy to find out for us. Turns out it's just a fancy word for sugar syrup.

The vibe is: Not as buoyant as it can be when the sun's shining on the rooftop terrace. Only the more intrepid punters were willing to brave the blustery conditions on this Friday afternoon but the view is sensational whatever the weather.

It smells of: Salt water and fresh rain.

On the stereo: A musical genre best described as a "whicky wah" jazz remix. You know the one.

Room for improvement: The rooftop terrace can quickly become overcrowded and uncomfortable. Which is particularly annoying if you've taken the initiative to book ahead.

The perfect spot: For sunset drinks overlooking the harbour. Call ahead to book your spot - this place runs at max capacity when the sun is shining.

Most redeeming feature: The drinks list, which is compact but well-edited. It has everything you need and nothing you don't. And nearly all the wines are available by the glass, which is a much appreciated rarity these days.
