Every season it seems like yet another fashion brand has a go at designing a new take on denim jeans that would have Levi Strauss turning in his grave.
But previously abhorred denim chaps and plastic-kneed Mom jeans fade into normality when compared to the latest from a Japanese designer, who may have finally taken things too far.
Showing their Spring/Summer 2018 collection at Amazon Fashion Week in Tokyo, the brand Thibaut debuted a pair of denim pants that are barely pants at all: everything but the seams have been cut away, revealing a thong-like foundation underneath.
The "edgy" look is not available to buy, though it may hit stores next year, reports the Daily Mail.
For now it's simply making waves online, brandished as a concept no one asked for.
The model who paraded the cheeky design teamed them with what appeared to be an old pair of sneakers and a nude bodysuit.
The "jeans", which have been distressed beyond recognition, appeared to have been taken to in the front and back with a pair of scissors.
Would you be brave enough to wear "thong jeans"?
And it's not just the legs that are missing: the fabric that would ordinarily cover the crotch and butt is also non-existent, leaving behind just fraying seams that look like a flimsy cage outline.
"Yes, thong jeans now exist and if you'll excuse me, I'm off to start my official Make Jeans Whole Again campaign," quipped a writer for HarpersBazaar.com.
While the new item is definitely worthy of raised eyebrows, it's far from the first piece of questionable denim to hit the market.
