Paraparaumu Beach School pupil Rico Albert has had a big surprise.

Rico, 12, had been at home recovering from a bout of sickness, when he was asked if he could come to school for something.

In front of a full school assembly last week the young boy was presented with a Sir Peter Blake Young Achievers Award.

"I was very surprised," said Rico, whose family was in attendence to see his achievement.
"I thought I was just coming to see the fitness course."

Westpac Paraparaumu banking consultant Jacinta Maligieri said it was the fourth time she had presented such an award at the school.

Sir Peter Blake was a New Zealand yachtsman who won a number of prestigious yacht racing events before turning his focus to protecting and caring for the environment.

"He's a great example of leadership and how through hard work and self belief you can achieve your dreams," she told the assembly.

"Sir Peter Blake also believed in the incredible potential of young Kiwis to achieve great things.

"He knew that inspiring young leaders could be found in every corner of New Zealand.

"Every year the Sir Peter Blake Trust offers the opportunities for teachers to nominate inspiring young leaders who show that they do good things in their school, home and community, they aren't afraid of a hard task, they're thoughtful and kind, and take on extra duties, do things with great attitude, and know how to have fun.

"And this year you have one of those students here."

Rico's award nomination read:
