Te Karere presenter Anzac Pīkia has died, aged 35.

TVNZ's Maori current affairs show released a statement saying it was "with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear colleague, friend and Matua, Anzac Pīkia.

"Anzac has been devoted to Māori broadcasting and journalism for almost 20 years as a reporter, producer and director".

It's understood the popular presenter's body will be taken to lie in state at Parawera Marae in the Waikato tomorrow. A service is to be held at Waitakere Funeral Services in Henderson before his body leaves.

"Our kapa haka connoisseur, we will miss the sound of your voice, the patu of your poi, the kopikopi of your hope, and the pūkana of your eyes," the Te Karere statement said.

"Our deep condolences and aroha go out to Anzac's whānau at this time."

Pikia collapsed in a Rotorua cafe today and passed away soon after, reported Stuff.co.nz.

He had attended the opening of opening of an art gallery in Rotorua last night. Te Kaea reported.

Pikia began reporting on Te Karere in 2002 and also worked on documentary series Waka Huia.

He then worked at Māori Television as a senior reporter and producer for Te Kāea from 2004 to 2008. He then moved back to Te Karere.

TV presenters on various news shows are mourning the popular presenter news on social media.

TVNZ reporter Brodie Kane said: 'This is so incredibly sad, I don't know what to say. I am so so sorry to hear this, much love to all Anzac's family and friends xxx."

Presenter Matt Gibb said: "Awful news, huge loss. Love to his family, friends and colleagues."

Jodi Ihaka, former Maori TV presenter now working as the Labour Party's new Senior Communications Advisor (Māori), said: "Aue: tino tragic day for whanau, friends & NZ media. The talented, funny, beautiful & amazing Anzac Pīkia has passed away."

Te Kaea political reporter Maiki Sherman said: "Today the world lost a beautiful light in my darling friend, Anzac Pikia. Shine high in the sky my mate, he aroha mutunga kore."
