Should Matariki - Maori New Year - be a public holiday?

A Matariki mid-winter public holiday is off the calendar for now.

The private member's bill for a Maori new year break, put forward by Maori Party MP Rahui Katene, failed to pass first base in Parliament last night as she did not get the numbers to take it on to select committee stage.
