He has also been a member of Creative New Zealand, New Zealand Arts Council, Northland District Health Board member, and other regional and national boards and committees.
Mr Henare was at a Labour function at Parliament last night. Maori Television reported that he died overnight.
Sir Wira Gardiner and former National MP Tau Henare, a relation, were among those to pay tribute on social media this morning.
Labour MP for Te Tai Tokerau Kelvin Davis said Mr Henare had died suddenly. His knowledge, language and humour would be impossible to replace.
"A star from the constellation of Matariki has faded," Mr Davis said.
Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei said New Zealand had lost "one of the great Maori leaders, and a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of Te Reo Maori".
