A life member of both the Cheviot and Perendale Sheep Societies, taking an active part in shows, judging and a member of the Perendale Council for more than 20 years, Timms said they like competing and have had "our fair share of wins".
However it's his 40-plus years' involvement with the Horowhenua AP&I Show that Timms is probably most well-known, taking on the role of chief sheep steward from 1978 to the present day, including a four year stint in that time as president. He and Diane are both life members of the AP&I Show.
The show has diversified over the years from just a stock show to "more of a market day" to keep interest alive and bring town and country together, Timms said.
The Levin show is cited as one of the best in the country and one of the few to have a "good" grand parade of both animals and machinery, he said.
Timms has supported various local organisations, including 10 years on the Shannon School Committee, and providing financial support to Shannon rugby and Horowhenua hockey, helping build the Donnelly Park hockey turf.
A key member of the group that set up the Horowhenua Events Centre Trust, remaining a Trust member for nine years, Timms said he liked "getting things built", saving the trust $60,000 for laying the car park sand by finding a sand hill and calling everyone he knew to transport the sand.
Timms said he felt honoured and a "bit dumbfounded" by the QSM.
"I like being involved in the community and getting things done".
He said Diane, a stock judge in her own right, has been by his side throughout and had probably done as much volunteer work as he had.
"This could've been a joint QSM, it's been a team effort," he said.
