Contemporary weaving on display

A special exhibition of contemporary weaving is currently gracing Te Takeretanga o Kura Hau-po

Te Marama Puta - Emerging Light is a collection of works by weavers from Te Kokiri Development Consultancy Incorporated, who in 2018 are completing a Te Wananga o Aotearoa Toi Paematua - Diploma in Maori Art (Raranga) Level 5.

The exhibition is being held during the period of Matariki, which is considered a time to recognise the individual achievements of tauira (students) and kaiako (tutor).

The aim of the exhibition is also to share the personal development and achievements of the artists with family, friends, iwi, hapu, marae and community through a collective experience.

Te Marama Puta features nine artists - students Rowena Bullen, Barbara Collins, Nola Fox, Eleanor Gully, Heather Manners, Birgit Moffatt, Beth Purcell and Lana Woodford along with tutor Nina Paaka. The exhibitors represent different iwi as well as pakeha and other communities.

Interactive public activities are also part of the exhibition, with the weavers onsite to offer finger string games and plaiting of head bands using harakeke.
