Church programme for recovery from addiction

The Levin branch of the Salvation Army recently launched Recovery Church, "a place to belong before you believe".

Recovery Church is a concept that has been a part of The Salvation Army ministry for more than 20 years, providing church for those who don't feel comfortable going to a regular church.

The focus for Recovery Church is for those recovering from or still struggling with addiction.

Captain and organiser Chris Collings said the timing was right for Recovery Church in Horowhenua after seeing similar programmes succeed in other regions and being approached by like-minded thinkers in the community.

"Addictive habits are a problem - we want to do what we can to help people to recovery," Mr Collings said. "First and foremost, it's a place to belong."

He said the programme is about assisting people on their path to recovery.

"The church is led by Tim and Linda Murray. They bring with them a lot of heart and experience. They are keen to be on the journey with others."

Mr Collings said the Salvation Army is aware of many good services and programmes in town, and his hope is they will all complement each other to help people find positive outcomes.

"Our hope is as many people as possible can access something beneficial."

Recovery Church is held the first and third Thursday of every month at 7pm at The Salvation Army, 11 Durham St in Levin. For more information phone 06 368-8177.
