Barbecue for Taitoko community

Thanks to 15 local businesses and the Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), Solway Park now has a new community barbecue, christened on Friday with a free sausage sizzle.

The project was led by Constable Andrew Collis, who said it wouldn't have happened if not for the efforts of the whole community.

"This event has been great with a nice turnout. We are starting to look like a park," he said.
He said the project came about after community consultation by the NPT.

"We identified that the Taitoko community wanted a barbecue and family-friendly area," he said.

Collis approached local tradesmen and businesses in Levin asking for support, and received a great response.

The barbecue cost about $30,000 which was entirely donated.

Senior students from Taitoko school painted a mural around the block veneer of the gas barbecue.
