A major betting firm has taken a major hit after a gambler bet big on Tiger Woods winning the Masters.

As Tiger put the famous green jacket back on, a punter was scooping up piles of greenbacks.

William Hill US will make their single biggest payout on a golf bet after the punter put $125,660 on Woods to win at Augusta, 11 years after his last major victory. The winnings will be almost $1.76m.

Woods himself earned $3m for the win.

The firm's director of trading Nick Bogdanovich said: "It's great to see Tiger back. It's a painful day for William Hill — our biggest golf loss ever — but a great day for golf."

Woods was fourth favourite but some so-called experts still believed his 14 - 1 odds were too low to make it a value bet.

The wager was made two days before the tournament started, and while some labelled it "ballsy" others surmised it was placed by someone who could easily afford to lose such an amount.
