Redfoo has described being glassed by a stranger in a Sydney pub, saying his alleged attacker taunted him by winking and blowing him a kiss.

The X-Factor judge suffered a cut above his right eye when a glass was thrown at his head at Double Bay's Golden Sheaf Hotel in the early hours on Thursday.

The US singer was treated at the scene by paramedics, but said he did not require stitches.

A 21-year-old man, who allegedly attempted to flee, was stopped by security guards and has been charged with malicious wounding.

Describing the incident on Thursday morning, Redfoo said he and his friends had been dancing and mingling with female fans in a roped-off VIP section at the eastern Sydney establishment when "a dodgy fella" attacked him without provocation.

"I was just talking to some girls (and) I just felt 'bam!', something hit me in the head," the 39-year-old told the Seven Network.

The singer, upset to see blood on his hands, said he tried to chase after the man before security guards held him back.

"I just wanted to identify his face, so if I see him again I can say 'You're that kinda dude, who does that sort of stuff'," he said.

"What shocked me the most is that when he saw me look at him - he was being held up by the police - he looked at me and taunted me and blew a kiss at me, and winked his eye as if to say, you know, 'I got you' or something."

Redfoo, who said he's already made a statement to police, added that one case of "an idiot in a club" won't tarnish his love affair with Australia.

But he suggested that licensed venues use plastic cups instead of glass.

The pop star first confirmed the glassing via social media by responding to one witness of the attack, who had contacted the star on Twitter.

"Just saw @RedFoo get a bottle thrown at his head at the Golden Sheaf bleeding! Jesus Christ! What is wrong with people .. Hope you're okay mate," Josh Allerton tweeted at about 2am.

Redfoo replied: "Jealously is a hell of a drug!".

Redfoo is the youngest son of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, who signed The Jackson Five in 1968.

His alleged attacker has been granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Waverley Local Court on September 24.
