According to the Guardian, in a live interview today, Lægreid told Norwegian publication NRK it had been “the worst week” of his life.
The competitive skier and shooter went on to share that he had informed his girlfriend of his past infidelity a week prior, declaring he was hoping the “bomb” would bring her back.
“Six months ago, I met the love of my life and the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. And three months ago, I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her.
“I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her.”
He has refused to name the girl in question, stating that “she has had enough to deal with after last week”, but that he hoped he could “make her realise how much” he loves her through the interview.
“She’s probably still processing last week’s message, but I hope there’s light at the end of the tunnel for both of us. And that she can still love me.
“You have to admit when you do something you can’t stand for and hurt someone you love so much.”
According to Sky News, Lægreid appeared to be emotional as he addressed the situation again later in the day.
“Maybe it was really selfish of me to give that interview. So yeah, I don’t know. I was, I’m a bit, I don’t know... I’m not really here mentally.”
He has had a difficult few months since his 27-year-old teammate Sivert Guttorm Bakken died during a training camp before Christmas last year.
