Vanessa Paradis has opened up about her recent split from longtime love Johnny Depp.

But does she really go there? Kinda.

In an interview conducted just two days before the couple announced they were parting ways, the French actress and singer seemingly dropped a few hints that there was trouble in paradise.

"Love is the strongest and most fragile thing we have in life," Paradis mused during an interview for the September issue of Harper's Bazaar.

"Nothing is ever for sure, but when something in love doesn't work from the beginning, it's never going to work. Don't push it."

She added: "When you meet the love of your life, it's just obvious and natural and easier. You keep learning all the time. Sometimes you could be in an unhappy relationship; you are very much in love with someone, but it's making you unhappy and you think things can change and you can work it out."

Paradis also reflected on her early career days.

"I was for sure not prepared for fame when it happened," she said. "But nobody pushed me to do it. I wanted to sing, to dance, to work."

And as for fixing her famous gap-toothed smile, which the French call "lucky teeth"? Forget it.

"Why would I fix them? I was born with them," she said. "I can spit water through them. They're useful!"

Meet Johnny Depp's new girlfriend

28 Jun 10:30 PM

Pirates of the Caribbean star Depp, 49, and Paradis, 38, revealed they had agreed to separate "amicably" after 14 years together back in June.

"Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis have amicably separated. Please respect their privacy and, more importantly, the privacy of their children," dished a rep for Depp.

The news followed months of speculation over the state of the couple's relationship, fuelled by a January cover story in People magazine which suggested the pair had called it quits some time ago.

Paradis flatly denied a split at the time.

"The rumour is false, of course it is false...It's a rumour that could really damage my family," she said.

"You know, when I eat three peas, I'm pregnant. When I visit a city, I'm buying a house," she told radio station Europe 1 when probed about the rumoured split.

"In the winter I separate, in the summer I marry. It's been 15 years since I've been getting married every year. In addition I have to answer all these rumours!"

'What's happened to us is our concern...'

Paradis also recently sat down for a confab with French Elle magazine, and spoke of love and relationships, and dropped a few hints about the demise of her relationship with Depp.

"Who said that artists should sell their soul, expose everything about themselves?" she told the mag, as excerpted by People. "It's my duty to promote this movie, and my albums, but can you imagine what it feels like to see people making a business out of your pain."

But Paradis, who is currently treading the promotional treadmill with her latest flick, Cornouaille, was hesitant to talk about Depp.

"I don't want to talk about him," she told the mag, adding, "What's happened to us is our concern."

In the interview, Paradis also said she is happy with where she's at in her life.

"I don't have the recipe for happiness, but I think the engine is simply having the desire," she shared. "It's not feeling obliged or forced or repeating yourself.

"I hate, for example, whenever you hear someone say, 'You have work at being a couple'," she explained. "No, you have to want to be there."

"And for me, I want to be right where I am right now," she added.

Depp and Paradis have two children, Lily-Rose, 13, and Jack, 9.

Paradis said that she will continue to divide her time between the United States and France.

"My children are grown now, they are more independent," she said.

"My daughter loves singing above all else. Jack, he's a guitarist."

On whether the kids will follow in their parents' footsteps: "I can tell you that if they decide to launch themselves into this kind of career it will be a good thing for music," she said.

"For my part, although I do not regret what I did, I'd prefer that my daughter takes the time to learn, and, especially, to live her childhood thoroughly."

Split aside, the former couple appears to be on good terms.

The pair reunited at their mansion in France last month with the kids, according to Us Weekly.

"They were both relieved they got along well," a source close to the pair told the mag.

"They were joking around," imparted another. "At one point, Johnny held Vanessa's hand!"

But cool your jets, there's no reconciliation on the cards.

Depp's moved on. As we know, he's rumoured to be dating his Rum Diary co-star Amber Heard.

And it's serious. He bought her a horse, apparently.

Of course, as far as the tabloids are concerned, the equine purchase signals a spirited "Tally-ho!" and a love-fuelled gallop down the aisle for Depp and his rumoured squeeze.

But not before he's blown away the cobwebs and had some fun.
