Rachel Hunter is embarking on a "Tour of Beauty" for TVNZ's 2015 season.

Rachel Hunter is embarking on a "Tour of Beauty" for TVNZ's 2015 season.

TVNZ has confirmed the return of My Kitchen Rules NZ in its 2015 season announcement despite the show looking like it was off the menu after a lacklustre debut season.

The state broadcaster had dropped the older MasterChef NZ after its fifth season earlier this year, only for TV3 to grab the format for its own schedule in the New Year.

TVNZ has another major domestically-focussed primetime reality show in the offing - Our First Home will be competition for MediaWorks' perennial The Block with a set-up of three competing families buying and doing up a house to get the highest value gain at auction.

Also feeding viewers' hunger for all things real estate will be House Hunters, an observational series following the plight of Kiwi first home buyers.

Elsewhere, the 2015 new season comes with plenty of new vehicles for familiar TVNZ faces.

That includes the self-explanatory Nigel Latta Blows Stuff Up which features the presenter-psychologist going to extremes in the name of science.

Radar's Chequered Past has the usually ecologically-minded presenter revisiting his comedy roots in a show based on his stage show Eating the Dog.

The Rachel Hunter-fronted Rachel's Tour of Beauty has the former supermodel "embarking on a global odyssey to meet remarkable individuals from all walks of life who believe they hold the key to superior wellbeing, great health and age defying looks."

Shows at the other end of the spectrum to Hunter's adventures in international fabulousness include Bogans, a ten-episode look at Kiwi bogan culture.

Likewise, The Big Ward which follows the treatment of six morbidly obese patients at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital.

While every current law enforcement fly-on-the-wall series will be returning, the new documentary series I Am Innocent offers a different look at the law and justice system with a study of six cases of New Zealanders wrongly accused or convicted of a crime.

TVNZ's primetime contribution to next year's Gallipoli centenary will be When We Go to War, a six part mini-series with $6.621 million of New Zealand on Air funding.

The episodes will follow the individual stories of six different people from the same group of family and friends, some of whom served on the frontline as soldiers and nurses.

Descent from Disaster has various well-known broadcaster faces fronting a look-back at various local catastrophes based on their own connections to the historic events, while DNA Detectives will get high profile New Zealanders to trace their genealogy through their genetic links.

The biggest new local drama in the schedule is sort of an import - 800 Words is a show being made here for Australia's Seven Network which wanted a new vehicle for Packed to the Rafters Kiwi star Erik Thomson.

Thomson stars as a widowed father of teenagers who decides to shift his family from Sydney to start a new life in a small New Zealand town.

Also among the other few local drama and comedy offerings are a second season of Step Dave.

Kids - and older fans who remember the originals - are getting two big new remakes.

The reboot of Eighties series Terry Teo first announced last year is finally headed to screens in 2015 while TVNZ has picked up Thunderbirds Are Go, the computer-animated version of the 1960s puppet sci-fi classic which is being remade by Britain's ITV in conjunction with Sir Richard Taylor's Pukeko Pictures.

For grown-ups, predictably, crime and spy shows dominate TVNZ's new prime-time imports.

They include the second series of British hit Broadchurch, as well as new CIA drama Allegiance, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan's new detective show Battle Creek, Los Angeles police celebrity-protection thriller Stalker, Charles Manson dramatisation Aquarius, as well as How to Get Away with Murder which is the latest potboiler from Scandal and Grey's Anatomy's creator Shonda Rhimes.
