Allen grew up to be a rather geeky forensic scientist whose life changes after the lightening strike during the public unveiling of the S.T.A.R Lab particle accelerator.
He finally wakes from a coma after nine months a different person, discovering super speed and a feeling that the world is slowing down around him.
Soon however, he discovers he is not the only 'meta human' the lab accident has created. And despite him wishing to use his powers for good, others are not so well intentioned.
According to Deadline, the city experiences a "sharp increase in missing people, unexplained deaths and other strange phenomena".
Barry is then given a "new purpose to protect the innocent, while never giving up on his quest to solve his mother's murder".
The new show gives Gustin his first role as leading man after a series of smaller TV appearances in Glee, 90210 and Arrow - in which he played Allen and his alter ego, The Flash, for two episodes.
The Flash will also star Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh and John Wesley Shipp - who originally played the character in a previous series, aired in 1990 on CBS.
