Tour news: D'Angelo headed to NZ

D'Angelo, the acclaimed R&B star who was today nominated for three Grammy Awards, has been added to the New Zealand Festival line-up in Wellington.

He will play at the capital's TSB Arena on March 17 which will be the only NZ show of an Australasian tour.

His late 2014 third album Black Messiah - released 14 years after his sophomore effort Voodoo - was today nominated for a best R&B album Grammy.

His song Really Love also got him nods for record of the year and best R&B song.

New Zealand Festival Artistic Director Shelagh Magadza says D'Angelo is an exciting addition to the line-up.

"We were recently presented with an opportunity to host D'Angelo at the festival in March, and we couldn't pass it up. His extraordinary talent has been compared that of James Brown, Marvin Gaye and Prince and this one-off performance in Wellington is bound to thrill fans of soul, R&B, hip-hop and gospel."

D'Angelo performed at last year's Soulfest in Auckland.

Tickets via the festival's Culture Club go on sale today with general sales from Thursday morning.
