As for a mooted release date, Hummel adds: "As I understand it, they are planning to release it in 3D in early 2012, though I know they want to get Tony Scott's approval before they go forward."
Paramount's reps "could not confirm any immediate plans for a 3-D release date," reports Entertainment Weekly .
The movie, starring Cruise as "Maverick", recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.
A possible sequel to the flick has been touted for years, with Scott telling EW last year that Cruise could be back for Top Gun 2.
"We've been talking with Tom definitely," he said in November.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer also said: "The aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it".
Titanic, The Lion King, Star Wars, and now Top Gun looks set to wing its way to cinemas in 3D.
