If I was a rich man, tiddle tiddle tiddle tiddle teedle-ee ... once in your head, hard to get rid of - the famous lyrics to the famous song in the famous Fiddler on the Roof musical. And now the really famous Israeli singer Chaim Topol is here, celebrating 40 years of playing Tevye the milkman, in the show set in a Russian village in 1905. Tevye, his wife and five daughters are doing their best to survive under Tsarist rule but their fragile existence is further threatened by the pogroms, in which Jews were forcibly driven from their homes.
Now 71, Topol has appeared close to 2500 times as Tevye in both stage and film versions of Fiddler. He has been performing the show in Australia on and off for the past few years with the very same cast appearing in the Auckland season, including Barry "Bazza McKenzie" Crocker and Judith Roberts. Altogether now: "If I was a rich man ... "
