LONDON - Scottish twins The Proclaimers went to number one in the pop charts on Sunday with a re-working of their 1980s hit I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) as charity singles dominated the top spots.
The song, featuring comedians Peter Kay and Matt Lucas, had won rave reviewsafter its video was shown as part of the annual Comic Relief events which raised more than 40 million pounds ($110m) for charities in Britain and Africa.
It was the second such success for Kay, whose re-working of 1970s song (Is This The Way To) Amarillo spent seven weeks at number one last year after it was re-released for 'Red Nose Day'.
In second place was another Comic Relief single, Walk This Way, a collaboration between the Sugababes and Girls Aloud, the Official UK Charts Company said.
The song is a cover of the classic Run DMC/Aerosmith rock-rap crossover.
Canadian rocker Avril Lavigne stormed into third place from 84th with Girlfriend pushing US singer Gwen Stefani into fourth with The Sweet Escape.
Dance track Destination Calabria by Alex Gaudino featuring Crystal Waters was up to fifth while US band The Fray dropped a place to sixth with How to Save a Life. Take That dropped to seventh with Patience, Leeds band the Kaiser Chiefs fell to eighth with Ruby, with indie band Maximo Park climbing 21 spots to ninth.
Completing the top 10 was Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie featuring Ludacris with Glamorous.
