The new teaser trailer for the Power Rangers movie has been released.

On Saturday, Lionsgate Movies released the first brooding teaser trailer for the upcoming Power Rangers film.

In the preview, five teenagers from the fictional town Angel Grove come into contact with a colossal glowing rock face that infuses them with superhuman abilities.

The reboot of the children's superhero franchise - which began with the Fox Kids series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - will open next March.

Set to the Halsey cover of the Johnny Cash song I Walk The Line, the opening footage shows the rebellious Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Kimberly (Naomi Scott) and Billy (RJ Cyler) attending Saturday detention.

They, along with Trini (Becky G) and Zack (Ludi Lin), wander into a "restricted area" and find the rock face in the dead of night.

After Zack detonates a bit of it, Jason lifts a piece of rubble to discover it contains a glowing purple centre encircled by yellow.

Over the next few days, they begin to realise they have superpowers, including shocking strength, an ability to jump across a gaping canyon and amphibiousness.

The rest of the trailer consists largely of flashes of action such as a car being driven frantically through a collapsing construction site and Kimberly pulling Jason in for a kiss as they sit on a bed.

As the sneak peek draws to a close, fans of the brand will also recognise the appearance of the villainous Rita Repulsa, who was introduced in the 1993 pilot episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Played in this new film by Elizabeth Banks, she can be heard in the teaser hissing: "I've killed Rangers before."

As Kimberly lays in bed, her foe floats above her, clamping a hand about her throat before the two of them catapult upward and start to fight.

In the preview's final moments, the five Rangers-to-be stand in a circle around a coruscating swirl of blue fire.

As Billy explains: "It's happening!" Jason looks down and sees the iconic Red Ranger uniform beginning to materialise onto him.

Directed by Dean Israelite, the new film will be the third live-action Power Rangers feature.

The 1995 release Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and, in particular, the 1997 release Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie were savaged by critics.

In addition to the cast who appear in the trailer, the new film will feature Bryan Cranston as the Power Rangers' mentor Zordon and Bill Hader as the robot Alpha 5.

Power Rangers is due to hit cinemas in March next year.
