Pair’s political differences set aside after chance meeting.

The Prime Minister's son Max Key, 18, and Mona Dotcom, 26, the ex-wife of Internet Party founder Kim Dotcom, had a fortuitous meeting at an Auckland nightspot recently, sparking a new friendship.

While her ex played host at a club on K Rd launching his Internet Party Party, Mona held court with Auckland's bright young things at a society spot downtown.

"Max and Mona were introduced through a mutual friend and got on really well," said a spy at the Roxy that night. "I don't think Mona even realised it was John Key's son at first. They posed for a pic together with some mates, and Max pulled a funny move. He thought she was cool. They were having a good time together. There were lots of laughs and jokes."

But a source close to Dotcom said he would not see the funny side.

"Kim hates John Key. If he knew there was a picture of Mona and Max together, he would see that as an endorsement by his wife for his enemy."

However, Mona Dotcom told The Diary she wasn't playing politics. "Yes, I met Max. We happened to be at the same club. I didn't know him and had never met him before. He's kind, and we had a fun night together."

But the Coatesville resident won't be voting for John Key. Or Laila Harre. She says she's not enrolled to vote.

Asked about the photo on Firstline this morning Mr Key said his son did not realise who the woman was at the time the photo was taken.

"But I don't know whether that would have stopped him or not. I wouldn't care anyway - he's 19 years of age and he goes to clubs, she was out there as well."

New Lorde song surprises

Lorde's new song for the upcoming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 soundtrack will be finished this weekend, Lava Records president Jason Flom told the New York Post.

"[The sound] is going to be a real surprise to Lorde fans, but it's also in the spirit of her album. [But] she has very eclectic taste. She doesn't go for the obvious choices, so it's going to be very different from the other Hunger Games soundtracks."

Can we expect other Kiwi sounds on the album? The Broods, perhaps? No one is spilling just yet.

Lorde has curated the entire album, and her song will play over the end titles.

She is currently on tour in North America with gigs in Ottawa, Toronto and New York coming up. Her mum, Sonja Yelich, is playing chaperone and enjoying the perks of a private tour bus with designer Muji bedsheets.

Kiwis trump at Toronto

Invercargill-born actor Marton Csokas, 48, was the toast of the Toronto International Film Festival this week with co-stars Denzel Washington and Chloe Moretz as they stepped out at the premiere of their new film, The Equalizer. Csokas plays a well-inked Russian mobster. It's a long way from Dr Leonard on Shorty Street, circa '92.

But for the less Hollywood blockbuster-inclined at the fest, it was actress Raukura Turei who shone on the red carpet at the world premiere of Toa Fraser's film The Dead Lands. She wore a peach silk dress and a stunning Maori feather cape, prompting one Canadian journo to say "she gets our attention".

The Dark Horse and What We Do in the Shadows, by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, round out three Kiwi films premiering at the international festival.

Sean to be wild

Many happy returns to former supermodel Rachel Hunter who turned 44 yesterday, and radio host Sean Plunket who welcomed in the big 50. So, how did RadioLive colleagues celebrate? A cake? A pressie? A stripper?

"Nah ... ," chortled one colleague. "It's all above board."

Plunkey was in Wellington yesterday. The company sent him something special for the day itself, and "there's a little surprise planned for him when he's back in Auckland at the end of the week", a rep said.
