The Crown's Claire Foy is unrecognisable as The Girl in the Spider's Web

Claire has had a drastic makeover.

We're used to seeing her as the young Queen Elizabeth II, but Claire Foy has taken her career in a completely different direction after leaving The Crown.

The British actress has swapped her ermine robes for leather as she steps into the biker boots formerly filled by Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace to play Lisbeth Salander from Swedish writer Stieg Larsson's Millennium novels.

As the hacker at the heart of The Girl In The Spider's Web, Foy sports tattoos and a punk haircut to right wrongs, usually by torturing men who abuse women.

The eye-watering trailer for the forthcoming film shows Salander using a taser on the groin of a man who beats his wife.

David Fincher directed the first English adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which starred Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, but he has taken a backseat as executive producer for this sequel.

The director's duties fall to Fede Alvarez, whose previous feature films are both horror: the well-received Evil Dead remake and Don't Breathe. Alvarez's background seems appropriate given that Foy's avenging angel answers callous violence with creative and brutal punishments.

Alvarez also shares writing credits with Jay Basu and Steven Knight, the man behind Peaky Blinders and Tom Hardy's Taboo.

The Girl in the Spider's Web is the fourth book in the Millennium series, and was written by David Lagercrantz, as Larsson died before his original trilogy was published.

In Sweden, Dragon Tattoo and the second and third books, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, were all filmed with Swedish actress Rapace in the lead role. It is not known if there is a Swedish-language version of The Girl in the Spider's Web in production.

The Girl in the Spider's Web will be released on 9 November 2018.
