It's safe to say Auckland couple Jamie and Hayden had an epic fail with the judges by pairing a colourful graffiti splashback with black walls and fittings in their kitchen, but does that mean the house is any less appealing? The saying "kitchens sell houses" was bandied about The Block this past week but do they? Maybe big slabs of street-art shouting "Be Bold" from behind the saucepans might the bling point of difference for potential buyers.
3. The feelgood factor
There's always a sense of excitement when Block auction night rolls around. Those who have invested three nights a week in the show do tend to form some kind of connection with one team or another. By the time it comes down to the wire, you're right alongside them, sitting on the edge of the sofa, hands in mouth - crossing fingers for people you've never actually met and shouting at the TV screen. Inevitably there are tears, of joy or bitter disappointment. We're expecting floods if the emotional Sarah and Minanne have anything to do with it. Someone has to lose, someone has to win - but most of the time the contestants walk away better off than where they began. And that's where the feelgood factor comes in.
4. For the drama
Oh yes, there is always something brewing below the surface - some simmering unfinished business, perhaps an unresolved dispute. Will it all boil over in this pressure cooker episode? That is one very good reason you want to be tuned in - God forbid you miss the biggest talked-about TV moment since Poppy farted her way to stardom on The Bachelor NZ.
5. To discover the fate of underdogs Sarah and Minanne
Let's be honest, there was plenty of doubt when the petite sister duo first appeared on screen - could they even hold a hammer, let alone demolish a wall? Despite a dismal start with a less-than-inviting guest room, the pint-sized siblings have delivered some not entirely awful work, though the judges often marked them harshly. Sarah and Minanne finally did something right in their critics' eyes, finishing on a high with a win for their simplistic hallway and light and breezy kitchen design, but what will the mixed bag of good and bad rooms bring at auction?
