Now director Alan Taylor, who also directed Thor: The Dark World, has spoken out against that decision.
In an interview with Uproxx.com, Taylor made it clear he was not happy at having that part of the movie ruined, saying he had a few "unpleasant conversations" about it.
"I certainly directed those scenes with the intention that no one would know.
"I think they felt like they had to send a strong message to a very wary audience that there was something new, that this was going to new territory."
That meant people were viewing Genisys as a reboot and comparing it against the original James Cameron movies.
"I think they felt they had to do something game-changing in how the film was being perceived."
In the same interview, he also spoke negatively about his experience working with Marvel Studios, calling the experience "particularly wrenching" and saying they changed the movie in post-production.
Taylor was an accomplished television director before moving into blockbuster fare, directing the pilot episode of Mad Men and the final two episodes of Game of Thrones first season.
Terminator Genisys is in cinemas now, and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke and Jai Courtney.
