Sydney Sweeney’s new movie is officially a massive flop.
Christy, Sweeney’s Oscar hopeful, made US$1.3 million ($2.3m) over its opening weekend, screening in just over 2000 cinemas.
The film had a disastrous per-theatre average of US$649, ranking it among the poorest wide theatrical launches ever.
The biographical drama, starring Sweeneyas 1990s boxing trailblazer Christy Martin, struggled to connect with moviegoers despite an extensive promotional campaign and featuring one of the world’s best-known stars.
The box office bomb tells the story of Martin’s rise to fame as a female boxer and her nightmarish escape in 2010 when her trainer-turned-husband tries to kill her.
It marks Sweeney’s third box office bomb in a row after Americana and Ron Howard’s Eden.

“The MAGA crowd said she was going to be a huge box office draw after her voter registration leaked and Trump praised her. Since then, all three movies that she’s had big roles in that have come out have all flopped,” remarked one fan on Reddit.
“Imagine being one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and not being able to actually release a hit movie,” teased another.
