Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown quits Twitter over homophobic memes

Millie Bobby Brown has been forced to quit Twitter after she became the subject of a number of homophobic memes.

The Stranger Things actress, 14, became the subject of several photoshopped homophobic memes — including one that gained much traction on social media — that brought with them the hashtag #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown.

Some of the memes have been attributed to members of the gay community who found them amusing.

Brown's official Twitter page @milliebbrown comes up with an error message saying "sorry, that page doesn't exist" when users attempt to access it.

In reality, Brown is an active supporter of gay rights and an anti-bullying advocate.

Last year she wore an LGBT pin to the MTV awards and began another Twitter account @Milliestopshate in a bid to stop bullying, including cyberbullying.

In April New York Post reported Brown was set to earn an eye-watering US$3.2 million (NZ$4.5 million) for the next season of Netflix's hugely popular Stranger Things.

She was scheduled to get $25,000 per episode for Season 3, according to TMZ, but has negotiated a pay hike to $250,000 for each of the nine episodes.

It appears not all of Brown's social media accounts have culled. Her official Instagram page is still active and back in April she even shared a photo from the set where Season 3 of the show is being filmed.

But rumours circulating mean that Brown might be getting paid as much as $350,000 per episode, meaning her salary matches that of Hollywood actress and castmate Winona Ryder.

Brown — who was born in Spain but spent her childhood years growing up in Bournemouth, England — was nominated for an Emmy Award for her role as telekenetic teenager Eleven in Stranger Things.

Brown will make her big screen debut in next year's Godzilla sequel titled Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
