But now there is a new hope (sorry) for fans, with Ridley hinting more will be revealed about her character's parents in the trilogy conclusion.
During an interview withUSA Today, Ridley was quizzed over whether there would be more to the story when it came to her parents in The Rise of Skywalker.
"(Director J.J. Abrams) did say the question is answered. So at the end of the film, you do know what the dealio is," she said.
Abrams has previously fuelled speculation about Rey's past, telling Good Morning America: "I will say there is more to the story (of Rey's parentage) than you've seen."
While we won't know for sure until the movie hits cinemas, one clue may lie in upcoming Star Wars movie's name; The Rise of Skywalker.
With Luke dead at the end of The Last Jedi, (and Kylo Ren and Leia technically not Skywalkers) there aren't any other characters the title could be referring to.
