Star Wars: The Force Awakens has set a new box office record in New Zealand, earning a massive $1.57 million in its opening day.
That's half a million more than previous record holder The Avengers, which earned $1.01 million on its opening day.

Excited fans flocked to cinemas at the stroke of midnight to see the film on Wednesday night, and many say it is the best film in the beloved franchise.
The film is on track to smash more box office records, including highest opening weekend, which now belongs to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. That film earned $2.91 million when it opened in 2011.
