Spy: Actor Manu Bennett a man of mana

Action star Manu Bennett flew out to the US on Wednesday for his latest acting assignment.

But before he left New Zealand - to work on a secret film project in Michigan - the 45-year-old had a special dinner with one of his favourite New Zealanders, Maori rights activist and artist Tame Iti.

The pair dined out at Leonardo's in Rotorua, with Bennett's gorgeous partner Karin Horen and rising Maori designer Kharl-William Wirepa who has been invited to host a show at Paris Fashion Week.

"I'm good friends with Tame Iti and a big fan of his art," Bennett said.

"I'm very aware of his outspoken personality and the performances he manufactures to get his message across.

"Not many people could say their lives are dedicated to such a noble cause.

"Not enough people realise Tame is an artist and orator who defends cultural principles.

"The standing ovation he received for his speech at the recent Ted Conference is testimony to his new-found popularity.

"Like any outspoken indigenous leader, be it Sitting Bull or Nelson Mandela, Tame Iti will be celebrated as a cultural celebrity.

"He helps build bridges and this country should be very proud of him."
